A Week of Wonders at Honeybees!
What a bustling, brilliant week we’ve had here at Honeybees!
Our classroom has been buzzing with excitement as we dove headfirst into our new story, The Enormous Turnip. It’s been a week of "pulling" together—quite literally!
We’ve been focusing on our key vocabulary: stuck together, turnip, pull, and enormous. The children have been fantastic at acting out the story, using their very best "heave-ho!" voices to help the old man and his friends finally dislodge that giant vegetable. We’ve cleverly bridged our literacy and maths work by exploring the concept of size. The children have been practicing sorting objects into big, medium, and small. The highlight of the lesson was a lively debate about where exactly an "enormous" turnip would fit into our sizing chart—the consensus? It definitely needs a category all of its own!Outside, we’ve been turning into budding naturalists.
We’ve started our journey into the fascinating world of minibeasts, learning how to identify the tiny creatures that share our playground. From wiggly worms to scurrying beetles, the children have been observing our garden visitors with remarkable curiosity and care.
In Phonics, we introduced the sound 'p' for penguin! It was a delight to hear the children hunting for hidden objects starting with that crisp, popping sound. We’ve also been sharpening our ears for rhyming words and have been having a wonderful time during "Rhyme Time," especially our energetic renditions of Wind the Bobbin Up.Want to continue the adventure at home?If you missed any of our excitement or want to keep the learning going this weekend, why not try these simple activities:
- Go on a Minibeast Safari: Take a walk in your garden or a local park. Can you spot any "minibeasts"? Use a magnifying glass if you have one, and see if you can count how many legs they have!
- The "Enormous" Kitchen Hunt: Grab a few items from your kitchen cupboard (such as a spoon, a bowl, or a piece of fruit) and practice sorting them into big, medium, and small. Challenge your little one to find something "enormous" to add to the group!
- 'P' Scavenger Hunt: How many things can you find around the house that start with the 'p' sound? (Think: pasta, pen, pillow, plate, or even a picture of a penguin!)
- Kitchen Rhymes: While you’re cooking dinner, play a rhyming game! Say a word like "cat" and see if they can find a rhyme (like "hat" or "mat"), or sing Wind the Bobbin Up together and see if they can remember the actions.
We can’t wait to hear all about your home adventures on Monday, and as always don't forget to add your photos on Tapestry!
